Happy 2022 day-084! Today’s Continued Surprise from Yesterday…

Before using “Workday Studio” to focus on XML, let’s have some fun with HTML. We do this because HTML is similar to XML, and let’s just say it’s visually more satisfying to see your editing come to life than looping through data in a list of business objects (like Workers, Payroll Result Lines, Journal Entries, Candidates, etc.)

Reminder: The picture might look like Workday Studio, but recall it’s a plug-in for Eclipse — we are actually looking now at features of Eclipse that are not specific to Workday Studio.

  1. The readme.html file that comes with the Workday Studio (a.k.a. Eclipse) download, exposed to you via the File > New > Example menu. The default for .html files is to open inside the Web Browser.
  2. Choose instead to open readme.html using the Text Editor (via right click on the file and choose Open With)
  3. Similar to (2) but this time instead of the Text Editor open readme.html using the HTML Editor and notice the green, magenta and blue text surrounding the black text.
  4. Between now and the 9/9 pre-Rising Weekend Share-a-thon in Orlando you might find many more posts highlighting the color Purple (because of our squirrelly friend), but for now let’s turn this into a Challenge…

HTML Challenge (for those who have Workday Studio installed and followed yesterday’s day 83 steps): Change from Purple to Red or Blue or any color of your choosing. Using one of the text editors, save your change, and then refresh the browser (see “RED arrow” near yellow highlighted “1” for the Refresh icon in the Web Browser.)

Hopefully it’s clear that HTML can be viewed as text, or as colored text (not simply black on white) to help humans determine the actual words that appear on the web page, or as the web page itself (minus all the HTML tags, attributes, other aspects that help web browsers display the HTML for humans to enjoy.) Tomorrow’s day 85 continues the fun investigation of HTML and XML, and what makes them similar.
