Happy 2022 day-047! Today’s update…

In this morning’s Sharing Café we focused on Subfiltering, which requires an understanding of Related Business Objects (RBOs) and the fact that each report has one Primary Business Object (PBO) which is assigned based on your choice of Report Data Source.

While viewing a payroll report with a PBO of “Payroll Result” I asked the screensharing fan to click on the Business Object column and then click on All. This was so we could see what the potential RBOs are on the “Payroll Result” BO.

Some of the Sharing Café participants were new to Workday, so I thought the visual of seeing the RBO choices when editing the report would help explain RBOs. Also, seeing only the RBO icons makes it clear these are not [T] text fields, [#] numeric fields, or [calendar] date fields, etc. (often called the “simple types” as compared to the “instance types.”)

Clicking on the All prompt option during report editing helps with understand the #Workday Business Object Model (BOM). I typically say, “let’s see what types of fields are available, by reviewing all the field icons.” As the zoom driver scrolls down I say, “you can see here are listed only RBOs, so notice all the icons are either the one-to-one teaspoons or one-to-many back massagers (or forks.)”

Oops. Darn it. There it is again!… seeing the “Self referencing” icon show up while scrolling makes me cringe, because I really don’t want to say “teaspoons, back massagers, and also that self referencing icon which means this RBO is actually the BO itself, well, the instance of this BO in this current row of the report, well, anyway, we can talk about the self referencing field later.”

Darn you self-referencing-icon! If only you were easy to explain. And, if only you appeared in the list only once so I could at least try to explain you with a clear concise sentence or two.

CHALLENGE (this is another one that I am unclear on, so please jump in with your comments): Is a self-referencing field considered an RBO?
