Happy 2022 day-023! Today’s update, continuing w/TFC calc fields…

Going back to last week’s Sharing Café focused on extracting a single instance from a list of instances, we had glossed over the important (and required) need for a True|False field that helps us determine which one instance from a list of instances we are going to choose.

Going forward into this week’s Sharing Café (on Wed, Jan 26) focused on extracting multiple instances from a list of instances (as well as counting the number of instances in a list (CRI) and summing a numeric value (or currency value) from a list (SRI)), it becomes even more important to know what the True|False Condition (TFC) calc field does for a living.

A TFC gives you a True or False (Yes or No, In or Out) for each instance of a Business Object (BO) based on a specified “Condition”. What is a Condition? Think of a Condition as a Filter on a report.

Note that each #Workday report has exactly one “Primary” BO, the PBO…

If you understand report filters, you know that the Filter (RED “2” in the pic), contains a condition (which may contain several lines if you need to involve “And” and/or “Or” combinations of conditions, RED “3” in the pic) that is either True or False for each instance of the PBO (RED “1” in the pic, the Primary Business Object, which is automatically assigned when you choose the Report Data Source.)

Do you understand report filters, or do you not understand report filters?

Quote for today’s post: “There are two types “instances” of PBOs in the world of Workday reporting, those that satisfy the report filter and thus appear (typically as a single row) in the result, and those that don’t and thus do not appear in the result.”

CHALLENGE # 1: Is there any difference between a report filter and a TFC calc field (where the TFC CF is placed on the report PBO)?

CHALLENGE # 2: Could Workday have made the report filter a single T|F field (boolean), forcing us to create TFC calc fields instead of placing conditions directly into the report filter?

CHALLENGE # 3: Where in Workday (not report filters) are you forced to supply a single T|F field instead of creating a condition?

Feel free to comment here with your guesses/answers, and we will discuss further on Wednesday in the Sharing Café .
